Small Changes Pile Up

(The best pic of I could get. Here's Oscar winner Jordan Peele chatting with Oprah! We sat in the nosebleeds, but it was still incredible.)

I don't know how the hell it happened, but somehow I scored tickets to Oprah at The Apollo in New York City last month. I got to spend the entire day with my Mom watching the Queen of Media interview seven thought leaders in the entertainment industry. It was a transforming afternoon that'll I'll remember forever. Even better, we sat next to a really nice Canadian lady who bought us about women supporting women!

The last speaker of the SIX HOUR event was Salma Hayek. She mainly discussed the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, as well as her experience in Hollywood. Oprah asked her to explain why now, in 2018, real formative change was happening. Salma's explanation was brilliant and I also thought it had larger applications to our lives in general. Salma basically said we often get discouraged because when we make small changes or efforts we often don't see the result for a long time.

She then reminded us that our small efforts and small changes do add up over time, and while we don't know what the end result will be, eventually it will manifest itself.

This. This is what stuck with me. We have to trust that our small changes will manifest eventually. That can be really hard to do. I am not a patient woman and we live in an instant gratification society. But Salma is right.

The best thing you can do for yourself is to make small changes.

We all want to be the best versions of ourselves. We want to succeed in our careers. Make as much money as possible. Live healthy and happy lives. Do the right thing personally, professionally, financially. If you aren't there yet, you can get there, but you have to trust in the process of making tiny adjustments over a period of time.

I love this advice.

You can listen to Salma's interview, as well as the others on Oprah's Super Soul Conversations podcast. I highly recommend it.
